Apart from my intense interest
in everything Maremma, I run a sole trader business.
Through this registered business
name I design database systems for a wide variety of uses.
I also provide some software
support and training to businesses in my local area, which means up to
60km away! (One of the things just associated with rural Australia, but
then, who minds driving to somewhere as beautiful as Byron Bay?)
I developed my love of databases
when I got my first program written to track bloodlines of goats. Not
long after, I got my first and then second maremma, and realised how useful
would a program like this be to track the bloodlines of them too...
I was working with databases
as a user, and found many things with the systems I had very frustrating.
I wanted very much to leave the field of health, and began studying computer
programming.
I began to write some small
databases for myself, and then some applications for the hospital.
Up until this time, I was also
operating Zaeme Goat Dairy, supplying raw goat milk to the area. This
was an extremely rewarding lifestyle occupation, allowing me to spend
much of my time at home while my children were small. Unfortunately it
was not such a rewarding financial occupation, which is why I ended up
working off the farm also for some years, and began scaling the dairy
down.
I closed the commercial dairy
the beginning of 1998, and concentrated on Adult tuition and the development
of my database business.
The two go together now very
nicely, teaching and developing, and I never knew that a working life
could be so enjoyable. I have a great love for all things computer, and
enjoy teaching immensely - seeing someone else gain control of their computer
always thrills me!
As it happens, many of the
databases I have written have ended up being for use in Health or Health
related areas. In a way it is ironic, as I wanted to leave health work,
but I guess I have some knowledge of what the user wants to achieve, so
I can help from both sides. Many
of these businesses that I work with however are Community Health areas,
and I have found this very rewarding.
