These statistics are derived from my Database which contains all the Australian Maremmas registered until May 2000.

There are some very interesting facts and figures that can be gained from such a data set!

Below I would like to share some of them with you.

(These figures are of course for registered maremmas only)

It is plain to see how the breed numbers jumped from 1990 onwards. But it should also be plain for anyone to see that if there were only 17 original animals, and 77 bred from them in the first 6 years, then the numbers begin to rise the way they do, that the gene pool is in great trouble. Out of these 17 imports, 2 proved to be sterile. Interesting is also how those original 15 animals were used in the breeding program.

There were 2 dogs and 1 bitch in particular that became the greatest contributors to the overall breeding population, and today nearly every maremma in Australia bears these animals in their pedigree, many of our animal bear all 3 in their pedigree, and many bear them multiple times.

MAREMMANO KNIGHT COMMANDER

GRANDSIRE TO: 477
SONYMER KYBER
SIRED: 73
GRANDSIRE TO: 459
LOLA
BORE: 22
GRANDDAM TO: 353

As you can see, just one generation down, and a large percentage of our maremmas are related to these 3 original animals. Even though Lola, being a bitch did not produce a huge amount of direct offspring, her offspring are widely used.

Listed below are the statistics on breedings from the other original imports

So we see that for our 17 imports, 2 of them were sterile, so only 15 actually contributing to the gene pool, and some contributing far more than others.

Australia desparately needs new bloodlines to prevent us heading for a genetic disaster.

It does not matter what the quality of an animal is, you cannot continue to inbreed on that animal endlessly without running into problems.
